Double Roasters - Marrickville
Upon the recommendation of twitter, I sought out this suburban warehouse to find my first coffee of the day. Even if you can not see this cafe straight away, you will be able to smell the somewhat acrid smell of coffee roasting. Upon entry the cafe screams its character with ladders used as menu holders and a coffee roaster taking pride of place towards the back. This eclectic vibe is assisted greatly by the locals who have well and truly called this place home.

I started off coffee wise with a Nicaraguan Santa Rita Estate espresso with a dash of milk (called here a short long black), and was a little under-whelmed by the crema. It was thin and well on the way to being burnt while unfortunately masked the flavours with a char. As the espresso cooled slightly I was able to get a bit of the berry brightness, but the honey and toffee flavours/aromas were lost on me. I am thinking that this would make a good batch brew (which unfortunately they don’t do here).

I then went for the next alternative, which was the Mexican Oaxaca Organic as an espresso, and really enjoyed the contrast. It was a much lighter roast, with a much more creamy texture. The nutty aroma was perfect for the espresso, and while slightly hidden at first, the citrus like tart/sweetness eased its way in. Then in the after-taste, as I was breathing out, a warm cocoa/chocolate flourish finished the coffee off nicely. this is much more my cup of tea…. I mean coffee…

If I lived in this area, I have a feeling that this would be my local. The service here was friendly and attentive, and their knowledge of their own products means you have the opportunity to have a great coffee experience here.
