The Roots - North Sydney

**scratches head…. checks location** So I am a little confused. I sit here in North Sydney drinking great coffee. For anyone who has been to the desolate place (in coffee terms) you’d know what I mean, but following a hot tip, here I sit.

Walking in to the cafe, the first thing I notice is the blackboard with 4 different single origins to choose from, the you can have either as a siphon or a pour over. Not only that, on the 1st Thursday of each month from 5pm they do cuppings…!!?? O_o Colour me impressed.

So I started off with a Guatemalan Asobagri pour over and it came out viscous and strong. Perhaps they dosed this one e a little heavy, but with the solid dark English breakfast base, and a fruitiness that transitioned from blackberry to cherry as it cooled, it was certainly an interesting way to start the day.

I then moved on to try their house blend as an espresso. I figured if they were going to fall down anywhere, this would be it. While obviously a dark roasted blend for milk based coffees, it still retained a lot of character. Felt like I was tasting a whack of Kenya in there but I could be mistaken. Either way, if it can hold up as and espresso, I’m sure it works very well for those still requiring milk.

So basically I am overjoyed to FINALLY have a cafe I can recommend in North Sydney. This place has a great atmosphere, friendly service, and with Single Origin Roasters providing the beans, the monthly switch to new single origin coffees will be something to look out for.
