Japan #CoffeeHunt – Wk1

I have been looking forward to this opportunity to visit Japan again, and using coffee as a motivation to move around and try new things is working out brilliantly.

It goes without saying that I would not have been able to do any of this with out the support of a few key people, and roasters…so first thing first come the thanks.

These roasters supported me by giving me coffee to share, and both Sasa Sestic and Jimmy Chang donated $100 to my GoFundMe, which in addition to the other sponsors have made the 1st round of my coffee hunt possible.

The CoffeeHunt so far…

While it is likely easier to see exactly what my experience has been like over at my Instagram account, put simply, Japan has been heaps of fun. I started with coffee from a traditional kissaten (that for some reason or other often sell curry), and then have quickly gotten around to surprisingly delicious cafes. A couple you could ft quite easily into Surry Hills, Sydney.

The most annoying thing about Japanese cafes so far is that you never really know when they are going to be open. Very few open early in the morning, and only some are open by 11am. This is further complicated by the general lack of attention to the opening hours on sites like Google maps.

As for the benefits of the maps I made before coming to Japan, I have found that as long as I load them once before I leave WiFi, I can still use the GPS to find the cafes I am seeking. This has been VERY useful.

It is also funny to see how quickly word has been spread of a strange foreigner wandering the streets drinking coffee. Already a few times I have been asked if I am that guy from Australia. Apparently I stick out just a little bit.

In any case, the #coffeehunt continues (as long as I can afford it), and according to my revised Kansai Coffeehunt map (http://frid.co/kansaicoffee) I have quite a few red dots to check off my list. Hope you are enjoying sharing the journey. If you are, you are more than welcome to still shout me a coffee as I am trying hard to get enough together to make it to the #SCAJ event next month in Tokyo.

As for today, I think I will give Nishinomiya another quick go before heading back into Osaka (partly in search of WiFi).
